Als ein polnischer Ermittler beschließt, einen der ungelösten Mordfälle in seiner Stadt neu zu untersuchen, stößt er auf einen Roman, der alles zu erklären scheint. Er ermittelt gegen den Autor, einen polnischen Schriftsteller namens Krystian Bala, und verhaftet ihn schließlich wegen des Mordes an einem Unternehmer in Breslau.
Der Fall scheint geklärt zu sein, doch angesichts der dürftigen Beweislage stellen Kritiker in Frage, ob Bala zu Recht verurteilt wurde. Andrea Vogt zeichnet die Geschichte nach und interviewt Bala in dem polnischen Gefängnis, in dem er eine 25-jährige Haftstrafe verbüßt.
